Take a really good look at Sand Dollars, and for that matter, all kinds of seashells, sea fans, and corals, to appreciate their natural beauty. Any little kid with a pail becomes giddy when they discover a creature from the sea.

I couldn’t find the original source for this idea (if you come across it please let me know). But I could see its potential and wanted to include it here because it’s so beautiful.
I’m 99% positive that this is a real Sand Dollar shell. If you can’t get them on a beach near you, you can purchase Sand Dollar Shells on Amazon. Alternately you could use a Sand Dollar Silicone Mold and make your own.
I tried drawing on real shells with both Fine Point Oil-Based Sharpie pens and Fine Point Sharpie Permanent Markers. They both worked great. I preferred the oil-based pens only because they didn’t “bleed” at all. Finally, I’d suggest that you give the Sand Dollar a coat of clear spray sealer.
Sand Dollars absorb watercolor paints really well and you can play around to get whatever effect you want. Super simple idea to do with the kids.

Cindy used the leftover sand dollars from a family wedding to create this wall hanging. She cut out the letters for “BEACH” using a Cricut Maker cutting machine with the Sophisticated Cartridge. Of course the pretty, blue sparkly cardstock only adds to the beachiness! (Is that a word? Should be!!)
13. Sand Dollar Embellished Bottle
I started writing this post thinking I’d come up with 13 sand dollar art and craft ideas using real (or faux) sand dollars. Well, I got to 12.
Then I looked on my daughter’s windowsill and saw the blue-green glass jar. Twine, I thought. And sand dollars…they are all over our local beach, and my house has containers full from years of collecting them.
So in about five minutes I wrapped the twine around the bottle neck and gently looped the ends through the sand dollar. Instant beach charm.
There’s two more Sand Dollar craft ideas I’m working on.
One is a Picture Frame Sand Dollar craft idea that’s in pieces on my bed. I’m trying to decide whether I want to paint the frame and then distress it??
The other is a large wall art piece: Wood Sand Dollar Cut Out using Salt Paint. But there’s a bit of trial and error going on, still. I think it’s going to be beautiful. Fingers crossed…I will share it in a future post.

Both are interesting. Read The Fascinating Facts and Legends of the Sand Dollar.
