Inspired by Pantone’s 2020 Color of the Year
When it comes to coastal decorating, what is a more classic color palette than the color blue?
This true neutral color instills a restful and comfortable feeling. To use Classic Blue in your home decor, think about it like your favorite blue jeans. It easily goes together with just about any other color and with any decor style.

One of the most common questions I get is how to mix and match colors. Once you learn my strategy to Choosing Coastal Paint Colors (or colors for any decor style) you’ll be a pro.
But if you’re a visual learner I’ve created several Inspiration Boards incorporating Classic Blue (below). The coastal color palettes take their cues from nature, still life and artwork. Use them as a jump off point to spark your own color palette.
You don’t have to go all crazy overdoing the blue. Love it so much you want to paint the walls? Great. Go for it.
Whatever your desire or style there are so many options in home decor where Classic Blue will create a trendy space that is also timeless.
Here are some places to put your classic blue coastal color palette to work:

- Carpeting or Area Rugs. I’m loving the over-dyed look trend. Find a style you love with some deep blue tones.
- Painted Wood Floors. DIYers Yes, paint a worn out floor! If you find it to be too much blue paint stripes, a checkerboard pattern or try stencils.

- Upholstered furniture
- Painted furniture (Accent table, Coffee table, Console, Bar Stools, etc.)
FABRICS and SOFT GOODS
- Pillows
- Throws

Inspiration Boards incorporating Classic Blue
Here are some inspiration boards using Classic Blue as the “anchor” for q coastal color palette:
Is there anything more serene than gliding across the ocean on a sailboat at sunset? The peachy pink sky is soothing to the soul.
The varied colors of hydrangeas create a palette that is fresh and bright. Notice how the Classic Blue color keep the others from running wild. A floral shirt with new jeans. Yup.
Beach decor and Lighthouses go hand in hand. Red and white is an iconic color combination for the ones I’ve seen along the east coast. Red, white and blue (sky and water) is the hallmark of many Nautical Designs.
This spa inspired color palette takes its cue from the bright yellows and greens. A few patterned toss pillows or fun bowl to decorate a coffee table will add delight to any room.
Nature is the best inspiration. If it works outdoors, it will work in your home decor. Classic Blue isn’t exactly in the image, but your imagination will have you looking to the sea and sky.
This was my attempt at trying POUR PAINT to create an ocean scene on canvas. I decided it does sort of look like the ocean from high above the Earth…maybe from the Space Station!
The muted colors in this retro image evoke a nostalgic feel with a touch of romance. It takes confidence to wear heels along a stone path to the beach. Wonder what’s in her picnic basket?
Classic Blue will be forever trendy
The investment you make in your home using Classic Blue furnishings and accessories have staying power. This is a color, especially in coastal and beach designs, that will last a long time.
