SAIL AWAY NAUTICAL MANTEL
Cristina at remodelandolacasa started with a ship’s wheel for a bargain price of $15. Once she got it home it looked rather “puny” for the space. It looked a lot bigger in the store. We can all relate.
No worries…she repurposed a past decorating art piece and added some nautical accessories to create this unique design. Get your creativity on!
It’s easy to create a perfectly styled fireplace mantel (or floating mantel) that becomes the focal point of your room. Once you learn the three simple tricks you’ll be changing up your decor every season like a pro!
The STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS below were inspired by a post on Overstock.com.
STEP 1: CHOOSE AN ANCHOR PIECE
A large centerpiece becomes the focal point, or “anchor”, for the rest of your mantel decor.
For coastal decorating, choose an anchor piece like framed mirrors, wall art, beach and coastal wreaths, or large clocks that complements your coastal style decor. They will instantly catch your eye and set the stage for the rest of your mantel decor.
STEP 2: ADD WEIGHT TO THE SIDES
A few tall objects with varied heights will add visual weight to each side of the mantel. I’m a fan of grouping three similar objects. Keep these items shorter that your anchor piece to create a nice contrast.
Great ideas for weighted pieces include a group of tall candlestick holders, vases, even coastal finds like larger pieces of driftwood or glass jars filled with your collectibles — shells, sand or beach glass.
It’s perfectly fine if the weighted items aren’t exactly the same. In fact, too much matchy-matchy is boring! But be sure they are similar in scale, style or theme.
The point of having weighted pieces is add dimension and direct your eye to the center of the mantel.
STEP 3: THE FILLERS
Filler items are the smaller item that will create a finished look to your mantle. Use large shells, a Monkey’s Fist, statues (birds, lighthouse, ship’s wheel, etc.) to create interest and drama. Other good ideas are books, small plants, unique and one-of-a-kind items.
All of you DIYers should display your treasured your object d’art (literally, object of art) in one of mantel displays.
