Durable and beautiful Sisal and Jute rugs for beach style homes
Bare floors are terrific but sometimes you’d like something under foot to up your beach decor.
The neutral color of Sisal and Jute area rugs makes them a perfect fit for a variety of coastal (and other decorating) styles and color palettes.
Sisal and Jute rugs are sometimes dyed, bound around the edges or woven in different patterns. All of these variations give you decorating options.
What’s the difference between Sisal and Jute Rugs?
Sisal is made from the agave plant. The fibers are extremely tough and sturdy. A sisal rug is low-maintenance and environmentally friendly. Since agave are grown in tropical or desert regions, sisal rugs are a natural addition to any coastal home design.
Jute is manufactured from fibers of the jute plant. You’ve probably seen and used jute in its other applications. Because of its durability jute is used in making burlap fabric, roping and of course, rugs.
How to clean Sisal and Jute Rugs
My experience with sisal and jute have been that they’re fairly easy to clean. Like any rug they accumulate dirt and will stain. Vacuum them like you would any rug. A mild detergent solution, like DAWN (R) mixed with warm water, will take up stains if addressed quickly.

1. Handmade Flatweave Sisal Rug
Many sizes and shapes available. DISCLOSURE: I have this rug in the family room and love it. The most surprising thing is the softness on bare feet. I vacuum it like any other rug. From time to time I even vac under it too, but don’t look!

A white rug seems like it would be a no-no for a beach house but NAH…Easy clean jute and durable fibers make this one a winner!
3. Jute Beige Area Rug | Inlay Border
The striped border adds a sophisticated design element.
4. Jute and Sisal Area Rug | Contrasting Border
A contrasting border helps define a seating area. This would be a lovely to anchor around a bed frame.

Fringed edges reminds me of an Oriental-style rug finish.
6. Chunky Hand Braided Rug | Gray
A thicker weave.
7. Natural Fiber Hand-Hooked Area Rug | Pattern
The tone on tone design is reminiscent of the colorful oval braided rug my grandmother had under her dining room table. No laughing, my Friends. You know what I’m talking about.
But this rug’s subtle design will be a welcome addition under your table or centered around a casual seating area.

DESIGN TIP: Layering Rugs
Sisal and Jute Rugs are perfect to layer on top of or under another rug.
Layering rugs, especially different fibers or rug types, is an easy way to anchor a space or unify a style.
Add a vintage-inspired, patterned design over a solid, natural jute rug for a beautifully textured, bohemian look.
Varied size, diagonal placement, and complementing color schemes are all simple yet effective ways to mix things up.Wayfair
